Arsenal and Chelsea first met all the way back in 1907.🀅 The Blues came out on top in the Division One contest, winning 2-1. Aft🦩er this the derby soon earned a reputation as one of the most exciting in England.

Games between the pair always attracted a raucous sell-out crowd, although it took until the Premier League era for the intensity of the rivalry to seriously heat up. After billionaire Roman Abramovich took over Chelsea in 2003, the Blues soon became one of English football’s elite clubs – threatening Arsenal’s status in the process.

A series of memorable encounters between the pair followed, with the teams meeting in no less than four major finals since Abramovich started investing in the club. The pair have split these down the middle with Chelsea winning the 2007 League Cup finals and 2019 Europa League final. Arsenal were victorious in the 2017 and 2020 FA Cup finals.

In recent times there has also been an increase in the amount of players crossing the rivalry by representing both clubs. Former Chelsea favourites Petr Cech, David Luiz and Willian all moved to Chelsea in the last five years, while Cesc Fabregas and Olivier Giroud have moved in the other direction.

The most infamous case of a player moving between the clubs is Ashley Cole. An Arsenal academ🐼y graduate, the left-back departed in acrimonious circumstances in 2006, going on to win a host of major honours with the Blues and carving out a reputation as one of the world’s best defenders. Gunners fans never quite forgave him for departing.

As of May 2021, there have been 203 meetings between the two sides in all competitions. Things have historically been quite close, however the Gunners have just shaded it. They have won 79 times to Chelsea’s 65, while 59 have ended in a tie.

Narrow the sample size to just Premier League matches, and things are even tighter. In 58 meetings between the pair Arsenal have won 22 to Chelsea’s 19. 17 have been drawn.

With over 100 years of history to choose from, selecting the best Arsenal vs Chelsea games ever was never going to be an easy task. However, here at ThePuntersPage we love a 👍challenge, so we have gone ahead and given it a go anyway.

2003/2004 – Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea

The 2003/2004 season was one of the best in Arsenal’s history. Led by all-time greats such as Thierry Henry, Patrick Viera and Sol Campbell, the Gunners com༒pleted a full Premier League campaign unbeaten.

They were favourites to win the Champions League a🍸s well. On paper they were the strongest team in Europe by some margin, which made Chelsea dumping them out in the quarter-finals extremely shocking.

With the scores level 1-1 after the first leg, the return fixture at Highbury was set to be some game. Arsenal drew first blood, with Jose Antonio Reyes bundling home on the stroke of half-time. Just after the break, Chelsea levelled things up through Frank Lampard, who finished on the rebound after Claude Makelele’s fierce strike was saved.

With just three minutes left and the game heading to extra time, Wayne Bridge grabbed a dramatic winner. Driving from deep, the left-back played a neat one two with Eidur Gudjohnsen before leathering the ball into the bo⭕ttom♉ corner. Many pinpoint the match as the moment that power started to shift from the red to the blue half of London.

2011/2012 Chelsea 3-5 Arsenal

If you enjoy watchin🍌g goals being scored — and who doesn’t? — you will love this particul🌄ar Arsenal vs Chelsea fixture.

Things got off to a quick start, with Frank Lampard finding the back of the net following a clever run inside 15 minutes. Robin van Persie then levelled things up before John Terry restored his side’s lead from a corner.

Minutes after the break Andre Santos levelled things up, and Theo Walcott got their first lead of the game before the hour mark. Juan Mata then thought he had earned the Blues a point with a sumptuous strike, only for Arsenal to turn on𓂃 the style in the closing stages.

In the final five minutes, Van Persie scored twice to seal an excellent hat trick. Arsenal’s victory set the tone for the Blues’ Premier League season. They would end up finishing sixth, but managed to ensure their involvement in Europe ♚the following campaign by winning their first ever Champion𝓡s League.

2013/2014 Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal

Even in his worst nightmares, Arsene Wenger would have never expected his 1000th game in charge of Arsenal going like this. With just seven minutes on the clock, goals from Samuel Eto’o and Andre Schurrle had already put 2-0 up.

Soon after, things got even worse for the Gunners when Kieran Gibbs was sent off for handball in bizarre circumstances. Gibbs himself had not actually committed the handball offence. Referee Andre Marriner had just mistaken him for midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. From the resulting penalty, Eden Hazard extended his side’s lead to three goals.

After this, the Blues took their foot off the pedal somewhat but still managed to add three more. Two were scored by Oscar and the last was netted by a young forward by the name of Mohamed Salah. Wonder whatever happened to him…

The devastating result all but ended Arsenal’s title hopes and put Chelsಌea in pole position. However, in the end, they did not have the legs, with Manches💮ter City clinching top spot by two points come the end of the season.

Measuring fans is a difficult and, to be honest, largely pointless exercise. Our bestꩲ estimate is to take a look at each club’s social media following.

Chelsea just edge it as of the end of 2020, boasting 93.2m followers across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube and TikTok, compared with Arsenal’s 76.4m.

For match-going fans, things are different. Despite exuberant ticket prices, the Gunners’ 60,704-seater Emirates Stadium is much larger than Stamford Bridge, with its capacity of 40,834.

Thierry Henry

Regarded by many as the best player to ever grace the Premier League,✅ Thierry Henry’s devastating mix of pace, technique and composure made him a nightmare to defend ag♍ainst.

The Frenchman gave the Highbuཧry faithful a bucket load of iconic moments during his eight-year stint in North London, netting 174 goals and also chipping ꦐin with plenty of assists.

Dennis Bergkamp

It is impossible to include Henry without his partner-in-crime of many years, Dennis Bergkamp. Capable of doing things with a ball at his feet that others could only dream of, the Dutchman scored one of the all-time great Premier League goals in a game against Newcastle back in March 2002.

Pirouetting around Nikos Dabizas on the edge of the box, he fired an unstoppable strike into the net. The move was ty✤pical of Bergkamp’s time in England.

Tony Adams

Nicknamed ‘Mr. Arsenal', Tony Adams started his Gunners career all the way back in 1983. The centre-b༒ack would g꧑o on to make over 500 league appearances for his boyhood club and win a host of major honours.

Bridging the gap between the old and the modern, Adams struggled with his share 🗹of personal๊ demons, but never let his on-pitch performances waver.

Cliff Bastin

Had his career not been interrupted by the Second World War, Cliff Bastin would probably still be Arsenal’s leading all-time goalscorer today.

Part of Herbert Chapman’s all-conquering Gunners side of the 1930s, his record of 150 goals stood 🌜unchallenged for many years. It was eventually broken by Ian Wright, and then Thierry Henry.

Patrick Viera

It is testament to Patrick Viera's otherworldly ability that Arsenal spent a decade tryinꦜg to replace him, following his departure for Juventus in 2005. The all-action midfielder carried the team on his shoulders durﷺing his nine years at the club.

There was very little he could not do, from ꦰbreaking up play and controlling things from deep to chipping in with important goals.

John Terry

Captain. Leader. Legend. That is how a banner seen on ♍match days at Stamford Bridge describes John Terry, and 🦋we could not have put it better ourselves. Throughout 19 years in West London, the defender was ever-present in the side.

He would win five Premier League titles, five FA Cups and even a Champions League during his time at the club – although he would miss the final through suspension.

Frank Lampard

One of the best midfielders of all time, Frank Lampard may have not lasted l🅠ong as Chelsea manager, butꦿ his playing career will linger long in fans' collective memory.

The timing of Lampard’s runs into the box were scarily good, and they would see h🌳im score 147 Premier League goals during h𝕴is time at Chelsea. A host of other major honours would come as well.

Ron Harris

He may be an unfamiliar name for younger fans, but for Chelsea supporters in the 1960s and 1970s, no one was better loved than Ron ‘Chopper’ Harris.

The tenacious defender is the Blues’ all-time leader appearꦡance maker, with 795 games in 20 years. He was also part of the teams that won the FA Cup in 1970 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup one year later.

Didier Drogba

Dider Drogba was the ultimate big-game player. The Ivorian striker scored nine goals in his 10 major finals at Chelsea. This included a🧸 vital equaliser in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich, a game in which he also converted the winning penalty.

During his eight-year stint at Che🥂lsea he managed exactly 100 Premier League goals, firmly establishing himself as a fan-favourite in the 👍process.

Gianfranco Zola

It did not take long for Chelsea fans to fall in love with Gianfranco Zola after he arrived at Stamford Bridge in 1996.

At the time, Serie A was the best league in the world and diminutive number tens were all the rage. Zola was one of the very best, gliding across the pitch effortlessly and scoring a truckload of brilliant goals. He left in 2003 as an all-time Premier League favourite among Blues fans and neutral♐s aಞlike.

Diꦿdier Drogba is the top scorer in the fixture, with 13 to his name in all competitions.

82,905 is the record attendance for the game at a non-neutral venue, which cam൲e on 12 October 1935 at Stamford Bridge.
